About Me:
I am from Stevenage and am either lecturing on geography or researching Earth’s cold places from space during the day 🌍🛰️. Away from the desk I will probably be playing my Xbox 🎮, reading about travel 🛫, or going to the football ⚽.

My Work:
I teach students at university how the physical parts of the Earth work and also how to measure Earth’s environments from space. I also use this knowledge myself to research how the cold and mountainous places on Earth are changing.
-
My Typical Day:
My typical day starts with a 7 am wake up and if I’m being good 30 minutes on the rowing machine. I get into work at 9am where I will teach students in lectures and occasionally outdoors, then when I am at my desk I map changes to the Earth’s surface using satellite pictures. Home at 5pm where the real work begins on trying to get good players in my ultimate team on FC24.

What I'd do with the prize money:
I really want to set up a STEM club/initiative where school students can learn how to do remote-sensing (looking at Earth’s surface from above) for parts of the natural environment they care about, or are interested in.
The prize fund would go someway to starting this initiative where pupils can get hands on experience at using satellite imagery to see how the Earth’s surface is changing and learn how society can use this information to better live alongside nature and protect it for generations to come.

Education:
I went to the Barclay School in Stevenage where I studied Maths, Physics and Product Design at A-Level. I lasted three weeks studying aerospace engineering at the University of Sheffield where I then made the best decision of my life and switched to a degree in Physical Geography. This bachelor’s degree inspired me to take a master’s degree in Polar and Alpine Change at the University of Sheffield. And because I just couldn’t get enough of learning (and writing thousands of words) about ice I went on to gain a PhD from the University of Exeter.

How would you describe yourself in 3 words?
cold stuff measurer
What did you want to be after you left school?
When I was in lower secondary school a medical doctor, upper secondary an aerospace engineer. Now, I'm a Dr of ice who flies remote control aircraft for science, so maybe I achieved a bit of both.
Were you ever in trouble at school?
Once or twice, its always best to save your best jokes for when the teacher has stopped talking.
If you weren't doing this job, what would you choose instead?
I would love to be a travel photographer.
Who is your favourite singer or band?
Pulp
What's your favourite food?
Can never say no to a curry.
If you had 3 wishes for yourself what would they be? - be honest!
1. I wish I was a little bit taller. 2. I wish I could travel the world carbon free. 3. I wish could see the Earth from space with my own eyes.
Tell us a joke.
Me.
