This is a great question. When it comes to research skills, I think the best starting point is having a really good plan as to what exactly it is you wish to find out from your research.

1. Define your research according to the task you’ve been set.
2. Break down the task and give yourself achievable goals.
3. Evaluate your sources, there can be endless information out there but try to focus on sources that are reliable and non-biased.
4. Avoid plagiarism – it can be easy to copy word for word what a source says but try to get in the habit of being able to digest what is being said and reword it in your own way.
5. Lastly, practice effective reading. It can save a lot of time by not reading a source all the way through and instead skimming passages and pulling out summaries or highlighting important parts.
