I love it. I think itβs fun to find out new things that no-one else knows, but more importantly the stuff I find out can actually help protect our planet!

I really love being a scientist! I get to learn and discover brand-new things every day and I get to contribute knowledge to the scientific community that will hopefully make a positive impact on climate change. I pretty much always wanted to be a scientist, but I was actually quite bad at science in GCSEs, so I thought I wasn’t smart enough. But I worked really hard during A-Levels and I’ve since realised that anyone can become a scientist as long as they’re curious about the world around them and they have the determination to work hard at school! I now get to research something that nobody else is doing and I get to go to Antarctica next year! Pretty cool. And of course, I also really enjoy chatting to students and encouraging others to get involved with STEM π

I love it. I feel very fortunate to have a job where I get to learn something new every day and I have the opportunity to make a real difference to the world. It is not perfect, some days when experiments are failing I sometimes think it would be much easier to have a desk job but in reality I wouldn’t want to be doing anything else.

Andrew Lyon answered on 17 Nov 2023:
It’s a job that I really enjoy and wouldn’t want to do anything else.
There are always new things to learn and understand and a great variety of different things to do. The great thing with science is that the skills you learn can be used for many of the very different science jobs that are out there and there are always new things being discovered and new breakthroughs in technology, medicine etc.
In my job I help to reduce pollution and improve the environment and it’s great to be able to make a difference.

For me, being a scientist has been a perfect career choice – I have enjoyed it immensely. Now that I’m retired and don’t need to work, I keep on anyway because it’s so much fun.
