This is an excellent question! I’d say probably since the Industrial Revolution (1760 to 1840)…this is when we really started to see a huge shift in how we treated the planet. We started burning fossil fuels during this time and there were huge technological innovations that have been really important for our societies. However, this was also when humans began contributing to modern climate change and pollution. We are now seeing the severe impacts more and more each year. Here’s a cool video to watch:

Octavia’s answer is great. The Industrial Revolution is when we mark the start of human activity that has led to climate change. As time passed, more and more industry was created that relied on burning fossil fuels and the world’s population grew, meaning more agriculture was needed and more forest cut down for space or materials. So it’s been getting worse and worse over time which is why it is so important for us to act now to slow it down and stop it.

In addition to these other good answers, it should be remembered that the climate changes naturally, cycling between cold with lots of ice cover (an ice age) and hot with little ice over a time period of about 100,000 years. What is very unusual about the changes caused by human activities is the speed at which these are occurring, which is too fast for normal adaption to occur. In addition, due to over-population, the impacts of global warming could be devastating for mankind and so it is essential to do everything possible to slow down or even reverse this warming process.

We started to make real changes around 200 years ago. We are only to start to see the effects

Andrew Lyon answered on 15 Nov 2023:
There have always been natural changes but these takes place over a very long period of time. The severe effects have taken place over a much shorter period of time and I agree with Octavia’s excellent answer that this is largely since the industrial revolution.
