Question: If climate change was to get worse would plants be able to adapt to the heat

Great question! It depends on the type of plant, some plants are more able to deal with high temperatures than others. Also other weather conditions can have an effect on the plants, such as drought. If the plants don’t get enough water this can be harmful for their growth. The company I work for develop ways to protect plants, and one area we focus on is the effect of changing weather conditions.

This is an excellent question. Some plants will be able to adapt more than others- it depends on the species. Evolution and adaptations take thousands, sometimes millions, of years to occur, but organisms also have something called ‘phenotypic plasticity’ which means they can adapt quickly- to an extent to changing conditions. The plant species that live in places where conditions change a lot…like in the UK where we have cold winters and warm summers…are more likely to survive and adapt to climate change compared to plants that live in areas that don’t change much throughout the year.
