I started my first degree in Zoology (a bachelor’s) when I was 19, and my second degree (a master’s) in Marine Biology about three years later when I was 22. I finished my master’s when I was 24. I was then a Biology teacher in London for a year and I’m now doing a PhD (the highest degree you can get) which I started when I was 25. I’m 26 now, and I have about three years left of my degree! So I started studying science at university when I was 19 and I started my current job as a scientist when I was 25 🙂

I started my degree in Natural Sciences, specialising in chemistry when I was 18. I started working as a scientist when I was 22.

I started work after university when I was 26 years old. That followed going to university when I was 19 years old. But I always think I really became a scientist when I was very young and started experimenting with toys and other things to see how they worked – so probably about 6 or 7 years old!

I left highschool and went into many different jobs but ended up being a chef for nearly 15 years, but I always wanted more and one day I decided I wanted to go back to uni. I remembered I liked science when I was at school and because I was a chef I chose to study Food Bioscience. I had to go back to college first though, as my higher grades were so out of date, I needed to repeat them. I was about 30 at this point. I graduated in 2020 then went on to do a masters in Industrial Biotechnology. I was 36 by the time I finished this. I worked with algae and the devlopment of natural food colours for a year then started my PhD at 37. I will be 41 by the time I finish, hahah! I sometimes wish I did this all when I was younger but sometimes I think my maturity has been an advanatge in doing well.

When I was about 8 years old, I had a passion for finding out and trying things. I had a microscope for my birthday and science kits. After science A levels I took an apprentice type job working in environmental chemistry and studied for a degree part time whilst working.

That’s a good question, I’d say since I was 19 and started working for the Environment Agency. That’s when I started studying HNC Chemistry and also started to learn environmental science.

I started studying engineering since I was 20 but I became one when I was 25.

I was 17 when I started my first degree, 21 when I started research for my doctorate and 24 when I started working as a scientist.
I did, however, work for 1 summer as an archaeological scuba diver when I was 21. Really, this was more treasure-hunting, so doesn’t count. -

Like others have said I started my chemistry degree at 18 which I guess is when I became a scientist full time, but as far as I’m concerned being a scientist is more about being curious than anything else so thinking like that I’ve been a scientist since before I can remember.
