Octavia Brayley answered on 8 Nov 2023:
I really love learning new things and you get to do that every day as a scientist! It can also be challenging at times, so I’m constantly pushing myself and improving my skill set. It’s also really rewarding to feel like the research you’re doing is hopefully going to positively impact the environment and contribute to scientific knowledge.

For me, the best part of science is working on tricky problems that are important for the environment – and training younger staff who will do this work in the future.

Jonathan Allen answered on 8 Nov 2023:
My favourite thing is that I am constantly working on something new. I work on lots of projects that last for a month or two and then there’s something new to do. So I am constantly being asked new questions, learning new things and working with new people with different backgrounds and skills. It keeps me really interested in my work rather than doing the same thing every day with the same people.

Amy Stockwell answered on 10 Nov 2023:
My degree is in chemistry. I find it fascinating that the world is made up of atoms. Simple rules govern how they interact, but the variety of results is massive.
Now I am more of a generalist. I calculate environmental impacts of different processes and products, so I need to understand a lot of engineering.
